Composition Shingle Roof |
image |
| Description: |
| The majority of homes in America use composition shingles, but the roofing system is suited to either a residential or commercial application. The shingles are made of a base (organic or fiberglass) that is saturated with asphalt and coated with minerals on one side to resist weathering. The fiberglass shingles are more flexible and stronger than the organic shingles. Shingles come in a wide variety of colors. Composition roofs can be overlaid with a new roof if the initial roof is a single layer and in good condition. |

| Life Expectancy: |
| 20, 25, or 30 years, depending on the rating. |

| Maintenance/Installation/Concerns: |
| Most manufacturers will cover the roof under a warranty, but only if the roof is installed by a certified roofer. The most common problems and maintenance issues occur when installation of the roof does not include adequate venting and flashing. Moss buildup must be controlled to prevent damage to this type of roof (not unlike other types of roofs). |
