Shakes

image
Description:
Shakes are split from wood blocks; they are less uniform in thickness than shingles, are sometimes grooved, and frequently have little taper. Cedar shakes combine a traditional look with reliable, modern performance and are an environmentally friendly option for consumers. A great choice for developments with high appearance standards, slates also are available in composites of fiber and cement.

Life Expectancy:
30 years, if qualified installers use quality materials. The life expectancy decreases to 5-8 years if low-grade materials are used, or if workmanship is poor.

Maintenance/Installation/Concerns:
Pressure treated fire retardant shakes are required by many communities.
